For the Elbphilharmonie's Great Hall Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices have designed a concert evening within the series "NDR das neue werk", featuring music from Jóhann Jóhannsson to the vocal art of Leoninus, as well as the first approaches to choral polyphony in the context of the Paris Notre Dame School: Works for vocal ensemble and for choir a cappella, which were so decisive for the development of the occidental music tradition for centuries.
The strangeness and avantgarde of the music of the 12th and 13th centuries are ideal contrasts and counterpoints to the works of the 20th and 21st centuries, which are in focus of this concert. It ranges from rarely heard works by John Cage and Heiner Goebbels to the emotional Rilke madrigals by Bernd Franke and an outstanding piece by Arvo Pärt. One of the highlights of the program is the premiere of Michael Gordon's new work "A Western" - commissioned by Theatre of Voices.
