Theatre of Voices Festival

Koncerten indrammes af Perotins to værker for mandsstemmer. Midt i programmet står ‘The King of Denmark’ – Morton Feldmans hyldest til Kong Christian X ude i gadebilledet under 2. Verdenskrig.

  • GERTRUDE STEIN INHERITS THE TANGO

Gabriel Jackson - The dancers inherit the party (dansk førsteopførelse)

  • MUSIC CIRCA 1600 A Melancholy Flower

Således sluttes programmet med Anthony Holbornes muntre The Fairie-Round.

    Program

    William Byrd - Fantasia, II à 6

    William Cornysh - Ah Robin

John Dowland - Lachrimae Antiquae — Flow my tears

William Byrd - Laudibus in sanctis

John Dowland - Lachrimae Antiquae Novae —Time and the bell (T. S. Eliot)

John Dowland - Lachrimae Tristes — Ev'n such is time (Sir Walter Raleigh),

William Byrd - Ne irascaris / Civitas sancti

John Dowland - Lachrimae Coactae — Many men are melancholy (Robert Burton)

William Byrd - Tho Amarillis Dance in Green

John Dowland - Lachrimae Verae — The dove descending (T. S. Eliot)

Anthony Holborne - The Honie Suckle (Almaine)

    - The Fairie-Round (Coranto)

  • 1200 - PEROTIN & PÄRT - 2000

Experience music spanning almost 1000 years when Theatre of Voices invites you on a journey from Perotin's medieval music to contemporary pieces by Morton Feldman, Arvo Pärt, and Karin Rehnqvist.

The concert is framed by Perotin's two works for male voices. The music flows, and suddenly you are transported back to the French cathedrals of the Middle Ages. Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist finds her inspiration in the Nordic folk music tradition and the “kulning” calls between mountain peaks. In her songs, we encounter the light and peace of nature. Peace also prevails in Pärt's minimalist world in the music for organ, percussion, or the human voice. At the heart of the program you will hear ‘The King of Denmark’ – Morton Feldman's homage to King Christian X riding the streets of Copenhagen during World War II. The silent protest is heard in the gentle beats of percussion. The concert features Ying-Hsueh Chen on percussion and Peter Navarro-Alonso on organ.

This program is performed at Trinitatis Church and Roskilde Cathedral.

  • GERTRUDE STEIN INHERITS THE TANGO

This concert is filled with new experiences featuring voices and a guitar quartet. Listen to a brand-new Danish piece, commissioned by Theatre of Voices, and Danish premieres of new works from the United Kingdom and Argentina.

The programme opens with Gabriel Jackson's piece ‘The Dancers Inherit The Party’ with a text by Scottish writer Ian Hamilton Finlay. Finlay had a great passion for architecture, landscape, and poetry, and created a park in Scotland with stones inscribed with his poems. In this piece, Jackson contrasts 1960s concrete poetry with sounds inspired by the 15th-century musical tradition and threads to contemporary music.

The world-premiere work is by the Danish composer Signe Lykke, who uses texts by the American-born poet Gertrude Stein. As a central figure in Paris, Stein played a significant role in the development of modern art and literature – and later even being referred to as the mother of American modernism. Her texts are uniquely maze-like and abstract, much like Signe Lykke's unconventional approach to composition and characteristic sound.

Drawing references from both Argentine tango and spaghetti westerns, composer Pablo Ortiz sets a text by Sergio Chejfec about the epic hero of Argentine national literature, the gaucho Martin Fierro. The piece is composed for four guitars and three female voices, and therefore, Theatre of Voices is accompanied by both the Scandinavian Guitar Duo and the Copenhagen Guitar Duo.

    Program

Gabriel Jackson The dancers inherit the party (danish premiere)

  • MUSIC CIRCA 1600 A Melancholy Flower

The festival's final concert takes us to the world of English Renaissance music of the 17th century and the famous lamentations Lachrimae. Drawing on Dowland's songs of tears, originally written as instrumental pieces, Paul Hillier has added lyrics from great poets of both the 16th and 20th centuries, including T.S. Eliot and Robert Burton. Although much of the music was originally without words, the melodies and music themselves tell stories, through William Byrd's wordless Fantasia and in the motets of Robert White and Byrd.

We need not dwell in melancholy, for as Dowland himself is said to have remarked, the tears of music can be pleasant - and not all tears arise from sorrow, but sometimes from joy as well. Thus, the programme concludes with Anthony Holborne's cheerful The Fairie-Round.

    Program

    William Byrd - Fantasia, II à 6

    William Cornysh - Ah Robin

John Dowland - Lachrimae Antiquae — Flow my tears
