Most of Diderik Buxtehude’s known vocal works are settings of German or Latin texts, but for this programme we have found a couple of rare examples of his use of his native language. He was born ca. 1637 in Helsingborg (now Sweden) and as a child he moved with his parents just across the water to Helsingør (Denmark) where his father was organist in Sct Olai Church.
As a young man, Buxtehude became organist in Maria Church in Helsingborg, and later, he moved back to Helsingør to become organist in Sct Mariae Church here.
In 1668 he took up the position in Maria Church in Lübeck where he lived and worked until his death in 1707. Especially his ‘Abendmusik’ – evening concert series – was very famous, and made Bach walk half way across Germany the hear the master.
