MICHAEL GORDON
A Western

As a pre-concert event Kings Place will be showing Phie Ambo’s beautifully filmed, award-winning documentary - Good Things Await - about a biodynamic farm in northern Denmark, and its farmer. The sound-track features music by Jóhann Jóhannsson performed by Theatre of Voices. It tells the story of the farmer’s difficulties with authorities unsympathetic to his philosophy, and also relates his connection to Noma, the world-famous Copenhagen restaurant.

The concert itself then opens with a shorter film also by Phie Ambo - Songs of the Soil - a more abstract meditation on the passing seasons at the same farm, with music by Pärt performed live.

In the second half follows the UK premiere of Michael Gordon’s A Western, which rests loosely on the 1952 film ‘High Noon’ (Gary Cooper & Grace Kelly)! The cowboy and his gun are treated as emblems of American mythology. Michael Gordon’s music doesn’t tell the story so much as refer to it, in order to evoke the atmosphere of 1950’s USA culture into which he was born and grew up.
