Berio: Sinfonia for 8 voices and orchestra
Written to celebrate 125 years of the New York Philharmonic, Sinfonia by Luciano Berio immediately became an icon, not just because of its use of amplified voices, but overall because of the famous third movement in which a collage of various musical quotations follows the structure of a Scherzo by Mahler. In a programme which is punctuated by revolutionary Italian music from the twentieth century, the innovative aspects of Venetian polyphony from the sixteenth century is heard in a work by the composer Giovanni Gabrielli.
In the second part of the concert, Theatre of Voices perform Berio's Sinfonia for 8 voices and orchestra.
