David Lang - Memorial Ground
David Lang world-premiere in Scotland - 'Memorial Ground' :
1 July 2016 marks the centenary of the first day of The Battle of The Somme – 21 weeks of fighting during which around 1.1 million people were killed or injured; approximately the entire combined population of Glasgow and Edinburgh, wounded or dead. To mark the centenary, East Neuk Festival in collaboration with 14-18 NOW, the UK’s official arts programme for the First World War centenary, has commissioned a new piece of choral music from Pulitzer Prize winning composer David Lang called Memorial Ground, which will be premiered at the festival on 2 July. This performance triggers a UK-wide singing project to inspire choirs across the land to make a performance of Memorial Ground for the weekend of 11-13 November 2016 – the weekend closest to the centenary of the end of the battle
