Join us for the Vimeo premiere of Eugene Birman's ARIA 空氣頌.
Theatre of Voices was meant to travel to Hong Kong for the premiere of ARIA in November 2020. Due to travel restrictions, we recorded material in Denmark instead. This was later converted into holograms for the 16 sold-out performances.
ARIA 空氣頌 was a part of ReNew Vision, a platform introduced to replace the New Vision festival in Hong Kong during 2020. Launched as a way to combat the multiple cancelled events of 2020, ReNew Vision represents a collaboration between Hong Kongese and international artists in a collection of cyber shows.
The aim of ARIA was to both visualize the data of air pollution in Hong Kong, as well as mobilize the audience with regards to the reality and quality of life in their city. Serving as a focal dramatic event for the autumn lantern festival, the work successfully turned the Forsgate Conservatory into a lantern of its own. A message of hope and optimism for the future where Hong Kong, that exists not only as a financial center for the world, but also as a place where the dream of a sustainable future glows just as brightly.
The work’s premiere took place on 12th November 2020 and was repeated no less than 15 times at the Forsgate Conservatory in Hong Kong Park, a giant greenhouse in the very center of Hong Kong’s concrete jungle.
