HELENA TULVE (Estonia)
The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Bashō)
(1st performance)

While Arvo Pärt is the world’s best-known Estonian composer, less familiar are the names of female composers working in the nation’s rich choral tradition. In this programme, Paul Hillier and his acclaimed Theatre of Voices present some of the finest new vocal chamber music to come out of the Baltic States.

There’s a world premiere work from Helena Tulve, based on Basho’s Narrow Road to the Deep North and Peteris Vasks’ powerful Window Encounter. Galina Grigorjeva is from the Crimea, but settled in Estonia; she has developed her own resonant style rooted in early Russian polyphony and chant. Finally, from Estonia, comes Veljo Tormis’s The Bishop and the Pagan, the story of early interaction between Finland (the pagans) and Britain (Bishop Henry). Latvian nights, Finnish farewells and Estonian encounters.
