GERTRUDE STEIN INHERITS THE TANGO

ENGLISH
GERTRUDE STEIN INHERITS THE TANGO

This concert is filled with new experiences featuring voices and a guitar quartet. Listen to a brand-new Danish piece, commissioned by Theatre of Voices, and Danish premieres of new works from the United Kingdom and Argentina.

The programme opens with Gabriel Jackson's piece ‘The Dancers Inherit The Party’ with a text by Scottish writer Ian Hamilton Finlay. Finlay had a great passion for architecture, landscape, and poetry, and created a park in Scotland with stones inscribed with his poems. In this piece, Jackson contrasts 1960s concrete poetry with sounds inspired by the 15th-century musical tradition and threads to contemporary music.

The world-premiere work is by the Danish composer Signe Lykke, who uses texts by the American-born poet Gertrude Stein. As a central figure in Paris, Stein played a significant role in the development of modern art and literature – and later even being referred to as the mother of American modernism. Her texts are uniquely maze-like and abstract, much like Signe Lykke's unconventional approach to composition and characteristic sound.

Drawing references from both Argentine tango and spaghetti westerns, composer Pablo Ortiz sets a text by Sergio Chejfec about the epic hero of Argentine national literature, the gaucho Martin Fierro. The piece is composed for four guitars and three female voices, and therefore, Theatre of Voices is accompanied by both the Scandinavian Guitar Duo and the Copenhagen Guitar Duo.
