Composer David Fennessy on his experience collaborating with Theatre of Voices

16.08.2023

“As a composer, I have naturally followed Theatre of Voices from a distance for many years. Their reputation as one of, if not the most forward thinking and accomplished vocal music ensembles in the world precedes them. In fact, it was watching them perform Stockhausen’s Stimmung in Glasgow, where I live, in 2012 that was one of the main reasons for my thinking I could start to compose again for voices, not having done so for almost ten years. I was blown away by their ability, clarity and commitment. Suddenly, vocal ensemble seemed like a viable vehicle for my own creative thoughts.

Fast forward another ten years and I was understandably excited to finally work with ToV on my Two Pieces about Heinrich Schütz at their festival in Copenhagen. To say I was not disappointed is an understatement! These pieces are demanding on the singers, each one of them exposed at various points in the music and it requires a certain bravery on the parts of the individuals of the ensemble. They rose to the challenge and it was a joy to work through the score with them. I cannot fault their professionalism but also their curiosity and willingness to take risks. Collectively the music was shaped - discreetly and purposefully - by Paul, allowing each voice to breathe and be itself.

The final performance at the Trinitatis Kirke will live long in the memory and I was moved by the warm response to the work. I genuinely hope that this is the beginning of a fruitful relationship with Theatre of Voices!”
