CONCERT:

North Atlantic Route - Michala Petri & Theatre of Voices

Online
Tuesday, Sep 29, 2020 at 7.00pm - Tuesday, Sep 29, 2020 at 11.59pm

Grammy winning vocal ensemble Theatre of Voices and the internationally acclaimed recorder player Michala Petri would have had a concert in Katuaq Culture House in Nuuk, Greenland, on 22nd September - the autumn equinox. Because of ever-changing flights and Covid-19 restrictions we had to cancel, and brought our suitcases full of percussion and new nordic vocal music commissioned by us to Sdr. Asmindrup Church in Denmark instead. We filmed the concert for our audience in Nuuk, but you are all welcome to enjoy it!

Here you will hear ‘Lamento’ by GALINA GRIGORJEVA that Michala Petri has kept in repertoire for many concerts the past years. We have often performed her music and recorded her ‘Salve Regina’ on Ondine. Galina is originally from the Ukraine, but lived in Estonia for many, many years. She now lives in Finland and teaches in the Sibelius Academy.

‘Song’ by PELLE GUDMUNDSEN-HOLMGREEN is based on Dowland’s famous ‘Flow My Tears’ - also known as ‘Lachrimae’ and was written as part of a big concert and recording project for Dacapo Records in collaboration with London Sinfonietta in celebration of Pelle’s 80th birthday; ‘Mixed Company’.

The Faroese winner of the Nordic Council Music Prize SUNLEIF RASMUSSEN has written ‘Songs of Solitude and Night’ with text from the Elder Edda and a poem by William Heinesen. Here is whale song, habour bells and saga sound in the sound effects of the the percussion. As preparation for recording the work we are working with Mathias Friis-Hansen, who also acted as percussion teacher for the singers.

Greenlandic composer and flute player ARNANNGUAQ GERSTRØM used her experience with and spontaneous emotional relation to a set of seemingly purely scientific terms for snow and ice from the Scott Polar Research Institute ‘Illustrated Glossary Of Snow And Ice’ as her starting point. Theatre of Voices has just commissioned a new piece from Arnannguaq.

The program has toured in Faroe Islands, Iceland and Denmark, and we thank everyone involved over the past two years!
